On Saturday, August 23, a lithography workshop with artist Lenka Kahuda Klokočková will take place in our printmaking studio.
Because we believe that art should be accessible, we are offering a 50% discount on the basic admission fee for those who register by Friday, August 22. The discount can only be applied in person at the Visitor Centre ticket office.
Lithography Course: Lithography is a term many have heard, but what kind of method is it really, and where do we know it from? Most often from galleries! This printing technique, also called stone printing, was extremely popular until the 1950s and enabled an easier transfer of colour. Most colourful images, posters, and flyers – and many artists and graphic designers such as Alfons Mucha or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec – worked precisely with lithography! Now you can come and try this fascinating method of planographic printing yourself.
One of the treasures of our printmaking studio is a very rare press machine called a Kontrapres. Artist and instructor Lenka Kahuda Klokočková is one of the few who still master this technique today. Thanks to her unique approach, you will be able to complete the whole lithographic process in just one day. Come and discover the magic of this original printing method! The workshop is open to everyone, regardless of prior experience.
About the Course: We will begin with an introduction to the geological origin of lithographic stone, the discovery of stone printing, and the historical milestones of lithography in the 19th and early 20th centuries. We will show examples from publications and original lithographic prints, and explain the technology of colour layering.
Next, we will prepare the lithographic stones through the so-called graining process, where fine textures are created on the stone with abrasive sands – essential for drawing. Participants will first practice drawing on a test stone with different materials, and then create their own design. The stones will be prepared for printing, and the lithographic press set up to print the motifs several times on sheets of paper. Depending on time, we may add a second drawing layer to create colour overlays. Each participant will take home their own print.
