The Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day commemorates both the student demonstrations against the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939 and the events of 1989, when a memorial march marking the 50th anniversary of the student revolt took place. The authorities at the time attempted to suppress the march, which instead sparked a wave of public protests across Czech and Slovak cities. In the days that followed, the demonstrations grew into peaceful strikes — first led by students and soon joined by citizens throughout Czechoslovakia. These events marked the beginning of the Velvet Revolution.
