We invite you to an art workshop focused on aquatint – a unique intaglio printmaking technique that allows for delicate tonal transitions and an atmosphere reminiscent of watercolour or ink wash drawing. Aquatint is one of the most expressive methods in artistic printmaking.
When: Saturday, 8 November, 10:00 – 16:00
Where: Art Studio, Port 1560
During the day, we will go through the entire process together – from preparing the metal plate to the final print. Participants will learn not only about the history and principles of aquatint, but above all about its practical application. You will try how to apply fine rosin powder onto the plate, how to heat-set it properly, and master other essential steps. Through gradual covering of individual areas, it’s possible to achieve a wide range of tones – from light greys to deep blacks.
Each participant will also learn how to apply and wipe ink into the etched areas and how to work with the printing press. The result will be your own original graphic print to take home.
Workshop fee: 900 CZK
Reduced fee: 600 CZK
Date: Saturday, 8 November 2025
Duration: 10:00 – 16:00 (6 hours) with a lunch break

About the instructor:
Francesca Svatek (born 14 May 1977) is a Czech painter and printmaker. She studied painting and printmaking at the Accademia di Brera in Milan and in Urbino. Her work focuses primarily on landscape. Quick sketches made on her travels are transformed into paintings with her characteristic bright colour palette. Rather than describing the landscape, she conveys it through free interpretation. In her prints, she concentrates mainly on her immediate surroundings — the courtyard where her family lives, along with its animal inhabitants. Her small etchings often depict horses, cats, dogs, and geese. She also works with woodcuts, often creating large-scale prints with the same themes.
Francesca gladly shares her experience as a workshop instructor both at Port 1560 and at the DDM in Český Krumlov.
Who is the workshop for:
The workshop is open to everyone, regardless of prior experience. Whether you’re a complete beginner or already have some practice, you’ll find plenty to enjoy. Our instructors will provide individual guidance and help you achieve the best possible results.
